Reflecting on TheMHS Conference 2025: A Gathering of Minds, Voices and Vision

In September 2025, we joined delegates from across Australia, New Zealand and beyond at the 35th Annual TheMHS Conference in Brisbane. Held from 2 – 5 September at the Royal International Convention Centre, the conference brought together a rich mix of lived experience advocates, clinicians, researchers, policy makers, service providers and community leaders.

The theme asked us to look ahead: what will mental health and wellbeing look like in 2050, and what must we do now to shape that future? Over four days, conversations were bold and ambitious. Together, we explored how to strengthen what is working in our systems while also imagining new ways forward.

What stood out most was the breadth of perspectives in the room. Lived experience voices were not only present but central. Researchers shared emerging evidence. Practitioners spoke of challenges and solutions grounded in daily practice. Policy makers listened and engaged, recognising that collaboration across sectors; from housing to employment to justice, is key to a well-functioning mental health system.

For Community Mental Health Australia, it was heartening to see how strongly community-based supports were recognised as a cornerstone of mental health care. The conference made it clear that holistic, person-led, and culturally informed approaches are no longer optional, they are essential if we are to achieve the vision of universal mental wellbeing.

“Real system change starts with listening to those who have lived it,” said Kerry Hawkins, CEO, Community Mental Health Australia. That spirit was alive in every session, panel and conversation throughout the conference.

We left Brisbane energised and encouraged, with new connections and shared determination to keep building a mental health system that is inclusive, respectful and grounded in community. TheMHS Conference 2025 was not just a place to share knowledge – it was a reminder of the power of coming together to imagine and act towards a better future.
